Program Details

Every participant in our program is paired with a small chamber ensemble. Over the course of a week and with the help of our fantastic coaching faculty, ensembles will learn a piece chosen specifically for them, rehearse it, then perform in the Student Showcase for their friends, family, and fellow musicians on the final day of the program.

In addition to the six coached rehearsals, musicians will participate in complementary activities each day, focusing on collaboration, physical and mental health, sight reading, active listening and practice performing.

Monday through Friday, the schedule will follow the same format each day:

  • Check-in 5:15-5:30pm: participants should plan to arrive with enough time to settle themselves and be ready to begin the daily workshop at 5:30pm.

  • Workshop 5:30-6:30pm: there will be a different experience each day for this time

    • Monday — Welcome and Introduction: We will begin the week with introductions to the program as a whole and to your ensemble-members and coaches. This time will focus on getting everyone comfortable with the feeling of collaborative music-making

    • Tuesday — Yoga with Martha Muehleisen: This yoga class will be suitable for all physical abilities and will be geared specifically towards instrumentalists. Martha is one of our fantastic coaches and an excellent violinist in addition to being a certified yoga instructor, so you are in good hands!

    • Wednesday — Sight Reading Party: After a couple of days to get comfortable with one another, it will be time to try something new! Sight reading unfamiliar repertoire is a wonderful way to gain a fun new insight into music-making.

    • Thursday — Performance Psychology: Sarah Whitnah, another one of our wonderful coaches, will lead this workshop focusing on nerves, coping mechanisms, and general mindfulness. You’ll be able to try out some of these concepts in the performance classes, then really implement them at Sunday’s concert.

    • Friday and Saturday — Performance Classes: Led by program leaders JJ Sechan and Mary Evans, these classes will allow each group the opportunity to practice performing in front of their colleagues before the Student Showcase. Each ensemble will perform once on either Friday or Saturday and receive comments from JJ and Mary. Those not performing will be given guidelines for active listening — you can learn as much from conscious observation as you can from performing.

  • Break 6:30-7:00pm: Make sure to bring some dinner or snacks to fuel up for rehearsal!

  • Coached Rehearsal 7:00-9:00pm: This is your time to work on the music you will be performing at the Student Showcase. This repertoire will be assigned to your group prior to the program beginning. You will also be assigned a coach, who will help you work in the most affective and efficient manor. Your coach will help you keep track of time and will make sure to give you a 5-10 minute break so that you don’t play for two hours straight.

The Student Showcase will take place on Sunday, August 18 at 3:00pm in the sanctuary of Broadmoor Community Church. We encourage all participants to invite friends and family to celebrate the gorgeous music you will have worked so hard to create!
